Welcome to Blogging

Writing in math is not really a new concept. Unfortunately, many of my students have not been made to write in math class before this time. As a math teacher, I understand the frustration of the student, "Why do I have to write my math?" as well as the frustration of the teacher, "If I wanted to read student writing, I would teach English." In my search for a way to ease the frustration on both ends, I discovered blogging. I began having my students blog the answers their thoughts on various math concepts and problems and was amazed at the results. My students were actually thinking about and articulating their thoughts in written form. Since the medium used was electronic, I was not receiving negative feedback about the writing. In addition, I did not have to decipher student handwriting or take home bundles of papers to grade. Instead, I could review the legible (although not always spelled correctly) work from anywhere I took my laptop or tablet. As a beginning point this year, I would like to know your thoughts about using blogging to write your math. Please comment on this post and answer some of the following questions in your response:

  • Have you ever written your own blog?
  • Have you ever commented on someone else's blog?
  • What are your thoughts about blogging on math topics?
  • What benefits do you feel blogging has?
  • What drawbacks could blogging have?

  4. Have I ever written my own blog? I have never really cared to write my own blog nor comment on anyone else's blog. Blogging would make the class much easier, less time consuming than writing would, and it would be beneficial reading other's thoughts and blogs about the subject.

  9. 1. I have written a blog I guess you could say. I’ve never done one for school, but I have on facebook, twitter, tumblr, and things like that.
    2. Of course I have commented on someone else’s blog. I do it pretty much every day since I am CONSTANTLY on facebook, tumblr, and especially twitter. And people blog on those websites every minute of every day, I swear.
    3. I am glad that we are doing blogging for math. I hate writing so much and I absolutely love to type because it is fun, simple, and easy, and it’s not so boring.
    4. There are many benefits. I like typing because it is way better than writing, and it makes me feel like I’m texting or at home on my computer. And it doesn’t make me feel like I am doing work; it feels like I am just having fun.
    5. I can’t think of any bad things…?

  10. 1. Yes, i have a Facebook account so its kind of a blog. (i have a tumblr blog but its totally different than this type of blog)
    2. Yes, i have commented on other people's posts on Facebook.
    3. To be honest, I think it can be more fun than actually doing work.
    4. The benefit that blogging has could be that everyone can be connected and we can easily know anyones opinion.
    5. The only thing i can think of that is a draw back for blogging is that people don't like to type alot....atleast I dont..

    ReplyDelete
  11. no, i have never blogged before therefore i have read someone elses blog. yet, i find the idea very cool and i would love for this to happen more often. i believe the benefits have alot to do with how fast you are able to type because it really advantage you if your good at it/blogging this could save time and its just fun:)there are still disadvantages to people who aren't as experienced typers this could make it harder for them and they may prefer just to type also spelling may be a problem for the teacher.

    3. To me it seems like a cool new way to do math.
    4. Blogging has the benifits of not having to worry about losing your paper and where you can just type up your answer.
    5. One drawback is just how we can't save our blog so we can do it later but nothing else other than that.

  18. I feel that blogging will be easier on the student and the teacher. In my opinion, I feel that we use to much paper in some of our classes, I think blogging will help students learn faster. The closet thing I use that's close to blogging is Twitter and Facebook. I've comented on peoples Facebook stateses and photos. I think that blogging math topics will help us in class and at home. For example if we don't understand a certain problem we could blog and ask how to do the question. The drawbacks could be that anybody could see it.

    3. I Think That It Might Be Difficult, Because There's Not Much To Really Write About With Math, But It Might Be Quite Interesting.
    4. We Don't Have To Use A Ton Of Paper, And We Get To Use Electronics, Who Wouldn't Love That.
    5. Someone Could Write Something "Bad", We Might Not Understand Exactly What To Say/Write. Some People Might Just Not Like The Math Blogging.

Some people might not have internet, or a computer.

  41. I guess i've blogged before, if facebook and tumblr are considered blogging. I do think this is a good idea because whenever somebodys absent they can go online and see if they've missed something or just blog their work to Mrs.Germany, one fault i think blogging might have is some kids dont have access to internet and they might feel left out but other then that i don't see any other problem with it :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I haven't ever made my own blog before, but it seems really cool. I also haven't commented on someone elses blog because I have never had one or used one before. Blogging on math topics would seem okay I guess, I don't know how to use one so I can't really answer that. Benefits of blogging would be to get known on the internet by sharing your thoughts. Drawbacks could be that people would know all of your information (depending on how detailed you are and what you share) and they are free to comment upon your approval.

  43. No I have never written my own blog... unless you count facebook as a blog.
Again no unless facebook is counted in the title of a blog.
I think blogging about math is a bit strange but I'm sure I will warm up to the thought.
Blogging has many benefits such as enhancing my ability to type, and letting me share my knowledge of math to others that may not be able to see me in person for me to tell them.
The only drawbacks I can think of are negative comments posted on the blog or computer problems to were you cannot get on the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have typed on a blog. No I have never commented on a blog before this is the first. I think that it will be neet for use to use the a blog as part of what we do in math. some of the benifits are when we are out then we can do part of our homework even when we are sick so we do not have to wait to get our make up work we have it on the web. some drawbacks are like no internet acess.

Some drawbacks for blogging is for the students who like to cheat and get free answers, this could also effect the students who do not have internet access.

  64. 1) Have you ever written your own blog? No. I have never written my own blog, I actually don't know how to.

    2) Have you ever commented on someone else's blog? No. I just found out about the concept of blogging and I dont know how to comment.

    3) What are your thoughts about blogging on math topics? My thoughts are that I think this is a really cool and interactive way to learn how to write the math problems out.

    4) What benefits do you feel blogging has? I feel that blogging helps you in many ways. One reason that it helps is you are most likely more cautious of what you post on this blog so you might have a better chance of getting it right. Another reason that blogging benefits you is that you might not get as bored as you would with your homework since you're not using pen and paper.

    5) What drawbacks does blogging have? Blogging has some defaults like maybe you can get distracted with using a computer. For example, you may be doing your blog, but then have another tab of "youtube" or "facebook" open. These things could get you very distracted.

4)you can benefit from blogs because you can have your questions answered and get advice on things you need help with.
5)drawbacks in blogs are things coulod get pretty ugly on the opinions people may argue because they think obe is wrong and some name calling may be exchanged between classmates and othe kids.

  70. 1. Yes, I have made my own blog before but I wasn't for school purposes, it was a tumblr account.
    2. Um, well not necessarily. When I'm on my tumblr blog I don't exactly comment on anything because you're really not supposed to do that.
    3. In my own personal opinion, I don't exactly like the idea of blogging math topics because it's boring.
    4. I honestly don't know of any benefits I could get from blogging about math. Maybe some answers...?
    5. I don't know of any. I barely know what "drawbacks" means.

Although ive never commented on someone else' blog before now , i have , accually , written my own blog.
I feel blogging no matter what for is a great way to express thoughts and ideas so using it in math would be a good way to work on things, and it will give you/others a chance to talk to others/you and express theyre thoughts so you have more than one opinion/outlook on things .
The only drawback i could see in this is people not taking it serious and using it to just " chat " about irrelevent nonchalant nonscence

-I think that blogging on math topics is a great way for students to better understand math.
-I think that students will enjoy math and they will have a better understanding of it.
-I think that some people could come on here and comment about things that don't make sense or don't have to do with math.
